Are you ready for it?
Taylor Swift seems to be hinting at a new era in her music career, and fans have a whole lot of theories about her seventh album.
Swift has posted a whopping six Instagram photos in the past five days, including Wednesday’s unveiling of a rare cover photo shoot with Elle UK, which was published on the magazine’s website Thursday along with an essay by Swift about her music.
“I love writing songs because I love preserving memories, like putting a picture frame around a feeling you once had,” Swift writes in the essay. “I like to use nostalgia as inspiration when I’m writing songs for the same reason I like to take photographs. I like to be able to remember the extremely good and extremely bad times.”
The recent surge of social media posts, plus the essay, have sent fans into a tailspin, trying to figure out what it all means.
Swift, 29, began dropping clues about her previous album, “Reputation,” in August 2017 by completely wiping her Instagram and posting dark, cryptic videos of a snake (the snake became the unofficial mascot of the album after Kim Kardashian infamously called her one). The album eventually dropped in November 2017.
But it appears now “edgy” Taylor Swift has been ushered out in favor of a new pastel mermaid-type aesthetic.
Bring on the fan theories.
Some believe Swift’s Instagram posts are a countdown to something (her album announcement? A single? The entire album?). One picture included seven palm trees, the next showed Swift sitting on the sixth step of a staircase and the next was taken behind a fence with five different cutouts. She didn’t post anything the next day, but fans even found a loophole there: she “4got” to post.
“IT’S DEFINITELY A COUNTDOWN AND IT ENDS MARCH 2,” one fan tweeted.
Others chimed in with photos of the official Taylor Swift “Reputation” 2019 calendar, which features a large flower stamp on March 2.
Another popular fan theory: palm trees are going to be a key symbol – perhaps like the snake was?
Swift has shown off palm tree-patterned outfits during a handful of key points during the “Reputation” album era, including an army jacket with a palm tree patch and a jean jacket with palm trees worn by Future in her “Endgame” music video.
During a scene in her “Look What You Made Me Do” music video, multiple versions of past and present Taylors are standing together. But one Taylor fans couldn’t recall seeing before was dressed head-to-toe in palm trees.
The color schemes and summer-y symbols Swift seems to be projecting have fans wondering if this was the album she had been working on before the Kardashian/West drama.
“There’s a theory going around that TS7 was what TS6 was supposed to be before Taylor had to get Reputation out of her system,” a fan wrote in a lengthy Reddit thread dedicated to sharing new album speculations. “Looking at the imagery that’s coming out, it does seem like a natural progression from 1989 and trop pop was the hottest sound at the time.”
“She was posting a lot of beachy/tropical photos after the 1989 tour ended and before she went on social media hiatus,” another user added.
Swift jokingly responded to the speculation Wednesday, just hours before sharing the Elle UK cover: “She just read all the theories 🙀,” she captioned a photo of one of her cats with a shocked expression.
Some fans pointed out that certain clues about past albums turned out to be dead ends.
“In about a month, Palm Trees will join Roses and Timeless as Taylor Swift Albums That Never Were,” one user tweeted.
Others joked about the extreme lengths they were going to in an attempt to piece clues together.
“Baby, let the games begin,” indeed.
